London and Country Mortgages will plant over 1 million trees in Africa thanks to its customers

Bath-based mortgage broker, London and Country, is planting over one million trees in Africa thanks to its customers in 2007. At the beginning of last year, London and Country launched a pledge to make EVERY mortgage a green mortgage and promised to plant 50 trees for every mortgage it completed in 2007.  50 trees are enough to offset a person’s carbon emissions for one year.  Having completed close to 30,000 mortgages throughout the year a total of 1.43 million trees will be planted. London and Country is the UK’s largest mortgage broker and employs over 300 people in the centre of Bath – it is strongly environmental and became a Carbon Neutral company in 2001.  This year it has worked with the charity Restore UK to plant trees in carefully selected sites in Malawi, East Africa.  The projects it supports assist rural communities threatened by deforestation and land degradation.  Not only do the trees help ‘lock up’ carbon dioxide emissions, they provide food, resources and other benefits to vulnerable communities. The pledge has been such a success that London and Country is continuing it in 2008 and will also be supporting some other projects closer to home. Phillip Cartwright, Managing Director of London and Country said, “We are delighted with how this pledge has gone this year and the trees we’ll plant as a result will have a real benefit to the environment and to the communities involved.  We are always looking at ways in which our business can do more to help the environment and its great that our customers can also feel like they are making an impact at no cost to themselves.”
