Cancer patients struggle with bills

Recent research from cancer charity Macmillan Cancer Support has revealed that around 27,000 cancer patients could be behind with their fuel bills and owe their fuel providers almost £3million.    The poll of cancer patients indicated that more than half were worried about the cost of heating their homes over the winter.

As a result three in ten had turned off their heating and a further one in three said they had even put on outdoor clothing in order to keep warm.  Clearly this is worrying news especially when keeping warm is a vital part of their recovery.

These findings underline the devastating impact that cancer and indeed any serious illness can have on the financial position of sufferers.  Although the use of protection insurance can’t prevent disease it can help with additional worries that it can cause.

Critical illness policies will pay out a lump sum upon diagnosis of certain specified conditions.  That money can help take away money worries, whether it is the mortgage or utility bills, allowing the patient to concentrate on getting better.  Income protection policies will replace lost income in the event that you are unable to work through accident or illness.

The frightening findings of the Macmillan research once again highlight that arranging protection could be the best money you’ve ever spent in covering the worst case scenario and removing reliance on the State, which is likely to fall short of expectation.
